Inside jokes are the order of the day at this hip, self-confident
hangout. The deer antlers hung over the bar are a reference to the
spot's namesake, the weird lounge in the cult film classic 'Blue Velvet'.
The ultra cool punk rocker juke box has a few fist-pumping power
ballads (think Journey) slipped in for ironic value. A slick nouveau
menu offers snacks as varied as sweet potato fries, ceviche and
Guinness fondue. The signature Slowburger is made with organic beef
and topped with heirloom tomatoes. A preciously brief wine list includes
glasses in the $5-$7 range, but also a sole bottle of $100 cabernet.
The beers are selected with equal panache, while cocktail creations
tend toward simple mixtures of citrus and high-end liquor.
A chummy, if clinically polished, stainless steel bar runs the length
of the hallway-shaped space. Or sink into the embrace of gigantic,
custom-built booths that can hold up to 6 people and make you feel
like you're ensconced in a sea shell. - - Anne Marie DiStafano (photo: Liz Crain)
